My Honest Review on the Anabei Modular Sofa
It’s been a little over a year since I purchased the Anabei Modular Washable 3-Seater couch, so this honest review is long overdue. I chose the gorgeous Heirloom Chestnut in Velvet with the contoured memory-foam insert/Deluxe (or “Memorix+”) comfort option. If you’re hunting for a sofa that blends style, comfort and practicality — especially if you’ve got pets (raises hand) or even kids — here’s how this one stacks up.
Why I Chose It
Since I was looking for an upgrade from my previous Poly&Bark sofa, the goal here was: overly comfortable and functional. Ultimately, because this one checked those boxes, plus the modular and machine-washable features, it was an absolute yes for me.
- The modular design means you can change the layout as you want.
- The fabric they used (Heirloom Velvet in Chestnut) is high-end, stain & liquid resistant, and machine-washable covers.
- The memory-foam / contoured cushion option (their “Deluxe” or “Memorix+”) caught my attention because I wanted something more supportive than ultra soft.
So yes — the promise of stylish + practical + comfortable is very much what drew me in.
The Good
Style
The Chestnut velvet is beautiful. Like, stunning. It’s a warm brown-toned velvet with a hint of richness, so it blends in perfectly with basically any decor theme. I get sooo many compliments whenever a guest comes over. The fabric also has a subtle horizontal “stria” texture, which makes it look more luxe than a basic velvet (especially in natural light).
Modular Flexibility
One of my favourite features is the ability to rearrange the pieces. Got friends over? Slide a section around. Want a chaise lounge setup for Netflix Sunday? Easy. The modularity invites change rather than being static. I love the idea of being able to add pieces as needed for long-term use when we get a larger space. And the frames arrive in individual boxes, so shipping and set-up aren’t as brutal as a giant traditional sofa.
Washable Covers & Practicality
This was a major selling point for me because I always thought the ability to somehow wash your couch made sense, but never actually seemed possible. Well, these fabric covers unzip. It’s rare to find a couch with washable covers, and when you think about how many germs get collected on furniture daily, washing is necessary. The site claims machine washable from top to bottom and strong fabric durability (100,000 double rubs) and stain resistance. I’ve washed the covers and can honestly say it did not compromise the look and texture.
Comfort (Mostly)
There are two comfort level options – Deluxe contour or Memorix+ memory foam. The Deluxe offers a plush sink-in comfort feel, while the Memorix+ offers a more firm supportive feel. For my comfort goals, I chose the Memorix+ and I am not disappointed. It’s actually SO comfortable that both hubby and I take naps on the couch regularly. The cushions don’t collapse immediately, and they hold their shape. Memorix+ is more expensive than the Deluxe comfort version, so keep that in mind when choosing.
The Not-So-Good
Of course, nothing is perfect. A few things I encountered (and saw others mention) that are worth knowing.
Cushion Firmness / Feel
Some people found the Deluxe sink-in cushions firmer than expected if you’re used to a super sink-into-it kind of sofa. One reviewer on Reddit wrote:
“Each cushion feels like a big firm bubble, … I still wish I did more research.” Reddit
If you prefer ultra plush lounging (you know, the kind where you completely melt), you might find this slightly more structured than you expected with the memory foam version.
Frame / Arm Support
A recurring complaint that buyers, including myself have experienced: because the modular frame is somewhat minimalist (for flexibility and shipping ease), you might feel the frame structure or arms depending on version and how deeply you sit. For example:
“The back and top cushions constantly shift out of place, so you end up lying on the exposed metal frame.” Facebook
In my case, I noticed that if I slump back (completely relaxing) the back pillows might shift — I just plump the pillows more often to compensate. But I do this more than I would like to, to prevent my back from feeling the bare metal frame. I also noticed that the modular chairs do slide on hardwood floors, so I highly recommend carpeted floors or a rug underneath for maximum stability.
Price vs Expectations
While the fabric and flexibility are solid, some reviewers felt the price was high for what is essentially a “modular” sofa with washable covers — i.e., “nice but maybe not luxe-lounge level.” One said:
“It is way too expensive for what looks like a gloried camping chair.” Reddit
While I did find it a bit pricey (~ $1,900 – $2,000 at the time), keep in mind that you’re paying for the custom comfort, modular design, washable covers, and versatility. If your priority is ultra soft plush lounging, there may be other sofas that feel more “sink-in.”
Returns / Assembly / Small Details
Because it’s modular and shipped in pieces, the assembly is yours. The pieces are light and easy to move, which is a plus, but also means sometimes things shift or the modules move (especially if on wood floors). There are no tightening connections on the chairs to hold them together. Also, if you ever need to return, some users say the return process has quirks (you may need to do disassembly yourself). So I’d give yourself a 30-day trial period mentally.
Final Verdict
Would I recommend the Anabei modular sofa? Yes — with caveats.
Go for it if you:
- Want a stylish, modern modular sofa that can adapt to your space (move, add, change layout).
- Value machine-washable covers and pet/spill friendly fabric.
- Like a firmer, supportive cushion feel rather than ultra plush.
- Are comfortable assembling pieces and accepting that modular frames vs traditional heavy sofas may feel a little different.
- Willing to invest in the comfort-level you desire.
Maybe look elsewhere if you:
- Prioritize that ultra-sink, cloud-like lounging experience (you want to melt into your sofa).
- Want heavy arms, deeply cushioned thick backs, traditional sofa feel.
- Are very particular about every detail of finish — because while this is excellent value/design for what it is, it may not feel “luxury high-end sofa” in every dimension.
All in all, I’m happy I pulled the trigger. It exceeds my comfort needs and fits my living room aesthetic (cozy, chic, flexible) and the washable covers are unmatched.
